Trump Bugged by Obama a Bigger-than-Watergate Cover-Up - By Douglas V. Gibbs

Was the whole thing about having allegations about Russian intrusion into our election all about covering up the fact that the Democrats were wire-tapping Trump, and other Republicans, already?  But, to avoid a Watergate scenario, in case it was found out, they could simply attach it to the Russian influence allegations?  Was the plan to point fingers at the GOP and Russia being in cahoots with each other dreamed up so as to explain away illegal, Watergate-style wiretapping, so that it would be easier to get away with it in case the reality of what the Democrats were doing got out there?
On Saturday, March 4, 2017, during the second hour of Constitution Radio with Douglas V. Gibbs, we addressed the allegations that Barack Obama used illegal wiretaps against Donald J. Trump during the election season.  Here’s a transcript of what we said:
I began the conversation.  “So here we are, we’ve got Donald Trump, puts out this tweet.  Here’s what he tweeted on Twitter.  Say that five times fast.  ‘How long has President Obama gone to tap my phones during the very sacred election process, this is Nixon Watergate, bad, or sick guy.’  Watergate refers to the early [1970s]* political Scandal which forced the resignation of President Richard Nixon, Republican.  It involved members of a campaign team to reelect the president being caught breaking into the Democratic party’s headquarters in the Watergate building and bugging their offices.  Trump also tweeted regarding this thing about the possibility of Obama tapping his phones; ‘Terrible just found out that Obama had my wires tapped in Trump Tower, just before the victory, nothing found, this is McCarthyism.’  McCarthyism was coined after the hunt for communists inside the American government and country of the early 1950s.  Trump later added, ‘Is it legal for a sitting president to be wire tapping a race for president prior to an election turned down by a court earlier; a new low.’
“Now, we haven’t seen the evidence in all this, but, Trump is President, maybe he has access to information we don’t, prior.  But, you know, there are many conservative talkers out there saying, and we talked about this earlier, Obama is involved in a silent coup against the Trump campaign using police-state tactics, during the election campaign, and now, shadow government bureaucrats, and all that, embedded.  So, how about you, Alex?  Do you think the Trump Tower was wiretapped, as Mr. Trump, uh, President Trump is accusing?”
Alex Ferguson, one of my co-hosts, said, “Well, I’m like the rest of the Republicans in the country in that is that I am scared to death of Trump’s impulsiveness.  He has a tendency to go off half-cocked.  But, if he can prove that Obama went to the FISA court and tried to get permission to wiretap him during an election, I don’t think he has to prove that he actually did it.  That’s enough.  I think.”
I jumped in.  “So, so what you’re saying is the allegation is just as good as proof.  Isn’t that what the Democrats do?  If the allegation is serious enough, that’s good enough?”
“No,” Alex continued, “there’s a difference.  If he had not gone to the FISA court, and there’s no record of him having gone, then, there’s no there, there.  But, if he went to the FISA court and got turned down, even if he didn’t, even if we can’t prove that he did some wiretapping without authorization, the fact that he went to get authorization to tap Trump, that’s enough.”
“Okay,” I responded.  “I think that’s a good way - you know, a former policy adviser for Obama, Ben Rhodes, of course, has blasted Trump’s claims, saying that this is ridiculous, all of the Democrats are.  But, so, did he?  Did they notify FISA court and ask for this?  Or, are you saying we need to find this out?”
Alex: “Well, we need to have some confirmation.  As far as I can tell, the media is saying that apparently Obama did go to the court.  If he did, then we…”
Doug: “Then the intent is there.”
Alex: “The intent is there.  If he did not, then we’ve got a serious problem.”
Dennis Jackson, the executive producer of the film “Enemies Within,” spoke up at this time.  He said, “Trump’s Tweet, and I quote, ‘Terrible.  Just found out that Obama had my wires tapped in Trump Tower, just before the victory.  Nothing found.  This is McCarthyism.’  Well, he says here ‘just found out that Obama had my wires tapped.’  Not that he ‘tried’ to get them tapped, not that he went to the court and requested it, so, to me, the burden now to some degree is going to be on President Trump.  I’m curious as to how he found out that allowed him to write what he wrote.  You know, so, uh, I think there’s a burden on the President to come forth with something, and I sure as heck would think that if he made a statement like this that the evidence, he would know, would be requested. You know, so…”
Doug: “It was interesting that Alex brought up the FISA court.  I decided to do a little digging here.  Heat Street former editor Louise Mensch, during the Summer, last year, according to her, the Obama administration, during the Summer last year, filed a request with the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance court, FISA court, to monitor communications involving Trump, and several advisers.  But, the request was denied.  Just a day before the 2016 election, Mensch reported that sources with links to the counter-intelligence community, confirmed that a Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISA) had granted a FISA court warrant in October to monitor activities in Trump tower.  So, that’s, so, it sounds like to me Trump isn’t just blowin’ smoke, here.  If this woman Mensch is right.”
Dennis:  “If they gave authority in October, surely they didn’t request the authority, so when they got it, they wouldn’t do anything with it.”
Doug:  “Well, the question is, did they wait until they got approval?  Or have they been doing it all along?
‘Well, we better try again to get approval.’”
Russia is in collusion with Trump and the Republicans narrative to cover-up their own illegal wire-tapping activities
Alex:  “We know that Obama lied about James Rosen.  His people said, ‘oh, no, we’re not investigating any journalists.’  And yet, they have him down as an uninvited co-conspirator.  So, this is not beyond the pale for these people to do.”
Doug:  “And, now, from what I’m reading, now, is that the new FISA request in October was because they said there were suspected links to Russia. That’s why they wound up getting it approved.  Because it was a national security issue.  Uh, so now, um, interesting.  I have said this all along. The thing has been that while we’re accusing Trump of allowing Russia to mettle in the election, they want him to be President; but that goes against all logic, does it not?  I mean, go back to Kennedy, who was kissy-kissy with Russia, when Teddy Kennedy was a Senator.  You tell me, Alex.”
Alex:  “He went to, uh, I forget which dictator they had going in Russia right then, the one that died early.”
Doug:  “Yeah, he was having drinks with him, if I remember properly.”
Alex:  “And he told him, ‘don’t worry about this cowboy, we’ll help ya take ‘em down.’  Uh, you got, uh, what’s his name, the Senator that went to Nicaragua, and told the Nicaraguans, ‘don’t worry, we’re going to do a Boland Amendment to cut off the Contra’s funds. So, the Democrats have played this game sufficiently, they’re projecting their own sins upon the Republicans, once again.”
Dennis:  “Well, then, of course, the famous quote off-mic, that was recorded.”
Doug:  “Obama to Medvedev.”
Dennis:  “Exactly.  Where he says, ‘After the election and I’ll have a little more, uh…”
Doug:  “Flexibility.”
Dennis:  “Flexibility.”
Doug:  “Yep, so who’s really in bed with the Russians?  Who really is?  It’s almost like this is cover-fire, isn’t it?”
Alex:  “The reason Obama doesn’t like the Russians is because they are no longer the Soviet Union.  They betrayed him.  Kind of like the reason they hate the Patriot Act. It’s the name that bothers them.”
Dennis:  “You think his roots with Frank Marshall Davis, that the communists have gone too far off the plantation, is that what you’re sayin’?”
Alex:  “I’m saying he’s following Frank Marshall Davis’s playbook to the letter.”
Doug:  “Here’s the thing, too.  They’re frustrated, because the election of 2016 has all these politicians, the leftists especially, not sure what to do.  I mean, the system has belonged to them for so long, and now this outsider, Donald J. Trump, has grabbed the reins.  The establishment is beside itself.  It doesn’t know what to do.  They couldn’t stop him in the presidential election.  They couldn’t stop him with unconstitutional rulings by federal judges.  They couldn’t stop Trump with rioting snowflakes making fools out of themselves in the streets.  They couldn’t stop Trump with a complicit mainstream media.  So, the Democrats are down to their final weapon.  A nuclear laser weapon.  Barack Obama.  They’re using Barack Obama to tap this, and do that, and work behind the scenes, and also what we were talking about earlier, this infiltration by the left, the bureaucrats and enemy staffers that are in there, because they don’t know how else to do it.  They don’t know how else to take him down.  These leaks that we’re seeing, they’re being perpetrated, I’m sure, by the Obama administration holdovers, and other liberal left staffers who man the proverbial fourth branch of government, the administrative branch.  But, I mean, and these people are not elected, they never seem to leave.  This year’s staffer for a Republican Congressman may have worked for a Democrat last year, and Bernie the year before, for all you know.  They are the keepers of the system.  The readers and the interpreters of the bills.  They are the true controllers of the establishment.  And, even through the leftwing staffers and bureaucrats remain in the federal government, the politicians, and the leaders, they feel like they’ve lost a hold of it.  They’ve lost their grip.  I mean, we got 1.3 million non-defense civilian workers in the federal workforce.  And, you know, the question is, how many of those have an intention to politically damage the Trump White House?”
Alex:  “Damn near all of them.  The interesting thing to me is that they’ve been backed up and backed up so far that now they are revealing their hand.  The tapes of what’s his name’s conversations…”
Doug:  “Podesta is one of them.”
Alex:  “Illegally made, illegally transmitted to the newspapers, we know that it’s Trump, excuse me, it’s Obama holdovers, we don’t know their particular names.”
Doug:  “Breitbart News had a conversation with a source that had working with the Department of Homeland Security for more than a decade, and supports Donald Trump’s agenda, President Trump’s agenda, and this is his quote, ‘“If you go down the list of current management at United States Citizenship and Immigration Services, USCIS, probably 80 percent are open-borders left-wing ideologues.  The USCIS probably has the most violent anti-border people in the United States. These are in the management. These do not believe in borders. I know them personally.”
I provided the transcript from that portion of my KMET 1490-AM radio program because I believe the conversation brings a very important treasonous possibility to light.
I ask again, “Was the whole thing about having allegations about Russian intrusion into our election all about covering up the fact that the Democrats were wire-tapping Trump, and other Republicans, already?  But, to avoid a Watergate scenario, in case it was found out, they could simply attach it to the Russian influence allegations?  Was the plan to point fingers at the GOP and Russia being in cahoots with each other dreamed up so as to explain away illegal, Watergate-style wiretapping, so that it would be easier to get away with it in case the reality of what the Democrats were doing got out there?”
That makes the bugging of Trump, and other Republicans, a larger cover-up than Watergate, because the Democrats consciously created the “Russia is in collusion with Trump and the Republicans” narrative to cover-up their own illegal wire-tapping activities.
* I erroneously said “1990s” during the program - a ridiculous error, since I know the history of Watergate quite well.  I was a child during the Nixon years, but remember my parents following the whole affair on television during the early 1970s.
