Our standard political science and history textbooks describe the official nature of our American government and its constitutional system, including the important roles of political parties and a free press, perhaps sometimes even admitting that powerful lobbies and financial donations exercise an outsize influence never envisioned by our Founding Fathers. But Webb’s many hundreds of pages make it unmistakably clear that at least for the last one hundred years or so, the sordid role of blackmail, often tied to organized crime or intelligence agencies, has also played an important, hidden role in our system of governance.
