In the early years of his administration, Cyril would continue reforms to reduce the pagan influence in the city. In one of his major initiatives, he would ensure that the Church better met the medical and other needs of Alexandria than did the pagans – an effort that would grow into one of the main missionary strategies of the Church.
There was continuing friction between the Church and Alexander’s Jews and Judaism. The Jewish community in the city had a long and distinguished history, and was in no mood to acquiesce to the political ascendency of the Christian community.
