Self-fulfilling Prophecy

Christian Zionism (simplified): unquestioning and unreserved support the state of Israel; the Battle of Armageddon; an army of two-hundred million; total destruction.

Maybe not in exact detail, but on the key points they may be getting their wish.  The state of Israel is not going to survive what is happening today.  This, of course, is a dangerous possibility, as…well…the Samson Option.  Nothing is off the table given the views of those who control such decisions.

Will cooler heads prevail?  Many point to the Israel lobby in the United States as ensuring there are no cooler heads.  While this lobby isn’t irrelevant, I find it secondary.  Absent the support of Evangelical Christian Zionists, the political landscape on this topic would change.

So, will cooler heads prevail?  Show me a cooler head in a position that can change the views of Christian Zionists and US politicians, and then I will consider this question. 

In the meantime, these Christian Zionists may bring their heresy to fruition, but this would be due to their false prophecy and resultant advocacy instead of any message from God.

Pistis vs. Polis The eternal conflict: the City of God versus the City of Man...

In the sacred annals of Holy Scripture, there lies an eternal narrative, a cosmic struggle betwixt the City of God, i.e. the faith (pistis), and the City of Man, i.e. the polis — a ceaseless contention between the pastoral sanctity of the countryside and the constructed chaos of urbanity. While this mindset has certainly fallen out of vogue within much of Christendom, the Word of God is replete with agrarian imagery, symbolism, and thought processes (emphasis mine):

The biblical writers share that understanding of agriculture and of eating itself… To use contemporary religious language, they have a “theological ethic” that embraces those crucial areas of cultural activity. Precisely for that reason, their mind-set differs from that of most contemporary readers of the Bible, although there are a few noteworthy exceptions. …The Amish, many of whom earn their livelihood from farming, might constitute the fullest exception: As a community, they have retained a recognition, once widespread, of the ethical and theological significance of agriculture.

As Mrs. Davis astutely observes, the Biblical writers espoused a theology that intimately connected agriculture with spiritual fidelity, a perspective largely alien to the modern mind.

This ethic, once pervasive amongst the faithful, recognized agriculture as an esteemed vocation, a sacred trust reflective of humankind’s stewardship over creation. There is a humbling aspect to such work, brought about by a total reliance upon God and upon His divine mercies (emphasis mine):

The care of plants forces people to realize that plants follow botanical laws and vulnerabilities that cannot be negotiated or wished away. ...To be an agrarian is to have one’s mind and imagination densely populated by other creatures. It is to unseat oneself as the center or focus of the universe.

It is within this context that we must examine the Scriptures, understanding the agrarian undertones that relentlessly critique the rise of an urbanized, homogenized civilization.

Headlines are so contentious these days, even vicious, one way or the other.  But, in fairness, nobody can rightly say that Joe Biden is the first president in our history to weaponize federal agencies to censor political speech, or even to indict or imprison his political opponents.  Abraham Lincoln was.

Most Americans find it hard to reconcile that with everything else that we’ve learned about Lincoln.  But in fact there’s a long train of abuses across the Lincoln administration, with ample documentation that’s always been available — just ignored.  A good place to start is John A. Marshall’s American Bastile:  A History of the Illegal Arrests and Imprisonment of American Citizens in the Northern and Border States on Account of Their Political Opinions During the Late Civil War (Philadelphia 1883).

Then there are the private letters, diaries, and memoirs that relate how the Lincoln administration posted armed troops at the polling places across the North, ready to arrest anybody who picked up a Democrat ballot.  How Lincoln soldiers kicked in the doors of opposition candidates at midnight and dragged them away to military prisons a thousand miles away, without charge or habeas corpus, leaving Republicans to run unopposed.  How they smashed the presses of opposition — or even just accurate — newspapers.  Posted armed guards in churches to ensure that only the sermons written by the Secretary of War were proclaimed from the pulpit — and pistol whipped any clergyman who strayed, dragging him bloody through the congregation and off to those same distant prisons.
