The Limits of Focus - by Vox Day - Sigma Game

Delta narcissism is a difficult subject for Deltas to contemplate. They’re accustomed to being praised for their competence and being reassured that they are, indeed, being put-upon and underappreciated for all the many vital things they do on a daily basis.

But it’s not that comfortable to be told that while the underappreciation is real, the fact is that the average Deltas lack of success is less because his talents aren’t known than because he absolutely refuses to engage in the one vital element of business that is required for even a modicum of success, namely, sales.....

...I’m not saying that if you’re a competent individual, you should stop doing what you’re doing and try to reinvent yourself into something you’re not. I’m not saying that at all. What I’m saying is that you need to view your natural inclinations as a weakness and a limitation, and devote at least 10 percent of your time to expanding your skill set, focusing on the things that make you most uncomfortable.

Here’s the fascinating thing. For all their natural distaste for sales and marketing, some of the most successful salesmen are engineers who managed to set their distaste aside long enough to learn the necessary skills involved.
